Johns School of Chemistry, University of Melbourne, Parkville, Vic. 3052, Australia INTRODUCTION The use of biomarkers as maturity indicators has been exploited in petroleum exploration studies but their application in probing coalification is much less developed.

We propose that a distribution of activation energies for moisture loss may fit such data as well, and would be consistent with the picture of different types of water-coal interactions, as suggested by the other data above. The fact that water is a good swelling agent for low rank coals cannot be overlooked. Recently, we have proposed [19] that the swelling of coals in good solvents is governed by a process that was earlier suggested to effectively involve a titration of specific interaction sites [20].
